`Ahu`awa
Cyperus javanicus
Family: Cyperaceae
Description: `Ahu`awa is a sedge with a
clumping form up to 3 feet tall. Multiple seed heads extend out of the
silvery green leaf blades. Because this plant is a sedge, the edges of
the leaf blades have a rough texture. This plant does well with its feet
wet and thrives in full sun. `Ahu`awa has no pest problems and should be
planted immediately as its vigorous root system will quickly outgrow the
pot. This sedge does well in marshy areas and will grow quickly.
Dividing the clumps often or cutting them way back will keep the plant
looking its best. `Ahu`awa derived its name from the word `ahu
which means 'to drink'. The fibers were used to strain the `awa before
drinking. The form of this clumping type sedge adds texture to any
planting and is a good fast growing filler. Allow for a 3-4 foot spread.
