`Ihi
Portulaca molokiniensis Family:
Portulacaceae Description:
This rare plant is native to the steep rocky, ocean cliffs of Molokini and
Kaho`olawe. This stout perennial herb grows low to the ground with
succulent leaves at the top of the corky branches. This plant thrives in
the heat of coastal and dry climates and needs extremely well drained
soil, though it has also done very well in other garden type settings if
good drainage is provided. This plant will branch and slowly spread out
to cover a small area. The yellow flowers appear on extended panicles. Plants can be divided. We grow all of our
material for sale from one cultivated patch in the ground.
