`Ohai
Sesbania tomentosa
Family: Fabaceae
Description: This endangered shrub is found
on the coast or on the leeward slopes of the Hawaiian islands. The
growth habit can vary from a low sprawling groundcover to a small tree
depending on the variety and environmental conditions which the plant
has adapted to. The pea shaped flowers can range in color from a
brilliant orange to a deep red. The foliage is a beautiful grayish
compound leaf. This plant thrives in the heat and has low water
requirements once established. It has become rare in the wild due to
habitat loss and feral animal predation. We grow this plant from seed
when available.
