Wiliwili
Erythrina sandwicensis
Family: Fabaceae
Description: Wiliwili trees are summer deciduous when the
beautiful flowers cover the tree. Orange colored bark and an interesting form
make this tree a good specimen tree. The wood is very light and
was used to make surfboards a long time ago. They have low water
requirements and thrive in the heat on the leeward side of the island up to 2,500 feet
elevation. Bright red seeds can be found under the tree. Flower color ranges from orange to salmon to light green or even yellow. This tree is related to the common Coral tree and is not to be mistaken
with the windbreak hedge material know as False Wiliwili.
