'Ōhi'a lehua, 'Ōhi'a mamo   Metrosideros polymorpha

'Ōhi'a is our favorite native plant to grow. It can be a tree or shrub based on the genetics of the parent plant. We grow 'ōhi'a from seed which flower after a few years and are likely to bloom red and start off with multiple trunks. We also grow 'ōhi'a vegetatively from mother stock that we have been keeping for many years. These plants flower sooner and we have chosen them for their the habit, leaf type, flower color, and vigor.
Flower color can be red, yellow, orange and everything in between. 'Ōhi'a can flower sporatically year round, but flowers heavily from March -June. Equally beautiful is the new leaf growth (liko) that flushes throughout the year. 
'Ōhi'a roots need lots of air to thrive. In dry areas, regular water is a must. 'Ōhi'a tolerates wind and heat very well and should always be planted in the full sun.
